Green églomisé Pardon Ball 17 Cm Or Witchball
A very beautiful and large Pardon ball in blown, reverse-painted glass, a light green with a lovely mirror-like sheen. The bubbles from the blowing process attest to masterful craftsmanship.
Circa 19th century.
Diameter of the gilded ball: 17 cm.
During the Pardon festivals in Brittany, a young man would offer a "Pardon Ball" in reverse-painted glass (mercury, gold leaf, or other) to a young woman he wished to propose marriage to. This ball was given to the parents, who then decided whether or not to accept the marriage. It is said that the size of the ball is proportional to the dowry.
Adorned with a metal loop, they were hung from the beams of the family home. A cork stopper is visible beneath the loop.
No cracks in the glass. Beautiful collector's items that are becoming increasingly rare.
