Moses 'by Michelangelo' In Biscuit - 19th Century
Moses, 19th-century biscuit statuette.
After Michelangelo's work (1513-1515) from the Tomb of Julius II in Rome.
Moses holds in his right hand the Tables of the Law given by God, on his return from Mount Sinai.
Dressed in an attractive drapery, he gazes wrathfully at the Jews worshipping the Golden Calf.
The horns on his head, which have become a sign of power, are in fact a misinterpretation by Saint Jerome in the Vulgate.
In fact, disturbed by the Hebrew phonetic faux-ami between 'karan' (to radiate) and 'keren' (horn), Moses' face is not horned, but radiating.
This linguistic error has crept into many works, both in sculpture and literature (Th. Gautier, Le Roman de la momie).
Dimensions
Biscuit height: 18.5 cm
Base: 6 x 6.5 cm
