Ex Voto, 1837: Horse Accident
A beautiful ex-voto, oil painting on wood dated 1837, depicting a horse-riding accident: a child struck by a rider, but saved through the intercession of the Virgin Mary with the Child.
A genuine tradition of folk art in Spain and Italy, this naive painting is rooted in Christianity; the ex-voto is a votive offering made in response to a request or in thanksgiving for a grace received following a prayer or a vow (votum) made for such purposes as healing, childbirth, good health of livestock, a bountiful agricultural year, etc.
The ex voto was commissioned from an artist, often one who traveled from town to village.
The initials “G.R.” preceding the date refer to the votive formula signifying the fulfillment of a vow and acknowledgment of a grace received (Grazia Ricevuta), in this case, the child saved from the accident.
Dimensions: 30 x 20 cm
On the reverse, there is a handwritten note from the period in pen (in Italian) that is difficult to decipher. A few words relating to the horse-riding accident can be made out.
In good condition, with slight cracking in the oil paint due to the passage of time and the expansion/contraction of the wood (a seasonal phenomenon caused by humidity).
Wood is sound.
