Paul Balluriau, “twilight”, Signed Lithograph, Late 19th Century
Artist: Paul Balluriau (1860-1917)
Chromolithograph on paper depicting a procession heading towards a small rural church at dusk. In the center, framed by the trees in the foreground, a young couple holding hands stands out. The young woman, dressed in a long, light-colored gown, appears to be carving something on the trunk of one of the trees, observed by the equally elegantly dressed young man. This could be a representation of a wedding.
This lithograph was created by Balluriau for the magazine “L'Estampe moderne”, series number 3, published in July 1897.
Two signatures of the artist are visible: one in the plate to the left of the composition, and the other handwritten, accompanied by a sanguine drawing of a face, in the lower right corner.
Paul Balluriau (1860-1917) was a French draftsman and illustrator. Trained by the painter Paul Saïn, he worked primarily for periodicals, including the “Gil Blas illustré,” of which he was the artistic director from 1897 to 1900. He also produced posters and illustrations for songbooks.
