Paul-louis Loiseau-rousseau (1861–1927), Bronze Sculpture, Reclining Nude Woman, 20th Century

Artist: Paul-louis Loiseau-rousseau

Elegant bronze composition depicting a nude young woman lying down. The body is stretched out in profile on a vast naturalistic terrace, draped with ample and turbulent folds.  The figure rests his head on his left arm, in an attitude reminiscent of rest. The modeling of the torso, hip and limbs reflects a search for anatomical harmony and a particularly fluid design of the shape.

The treatment of the naturalistic terrace contrasts with the softness of the body’s modeling: the deeply incised folds, the rugged reliefs, and the irregularly textured surfaces produce rich textural effects, evoking a rocky and organic environment. This contrast between the female nude with its smooth surfaces and the naturalistic material—deliberately rough and dynamic—constitutes one of the composition’s primary artistic driving forces.

Behind the figure is a large seashell, while a second shell, serving as an inkwell, is placed near her feet. These elements, integrated into the naturalistic terrace, help anchor the composition in an aquatic and mythological imagery.

The entire piece rests on an imposing polygonal pedestal of veined green marble, whose precious material and deep tones complement the bronze’s polychromy and emphasize the work’s luxurious and decorative character.

Signed on the bronze near the base.

The inkwell’s hinge is fragile.

In good overall condition.
