Large Bronze By Paul Ludwig Kowalczewski (1865-1910). Prehistoric Hunter On The Prowl
Rare and important bronze with shaded brown patina depicting a prehistoric hunter scanning the horizon.
Standing on a rocky promontory, one hand brought to his forehead to protect himself from the glare of the sun, the figure adopts an attitude full of strength and dramatic tension. His penetrating gaze seems to be searching for prey in the distance, while his athletic body is treated with a remarkable sense of anatomy.
Kowalczewski has paid particular attention to the ethnographic richness of his subject. The hunter is dressed in animal skins and topped with a spectacular buffalo hide retaining its horns. He also wears a necklace of teeth or claws, as well as extensive hunting equipment including bow, quiver stocked with arrows, spear, knife and various accessories hanging from his belt.
The quality of the chasing is remarkable. The textures of the skins, hair, beard, weapons and various attributes testify to particularly meticulous workmanship. The nuanced brown patina, with its warm reflections, perfectly highlights the sculpture's volumes and details.
The work is signed P. Kowalczewski on the terrace.
