Moreau-nélaton, Pardon Of Saint John
Artist: Etienne Moreau-nélaton (paris, 1859 - 1927)
Original lithographic plate n°178 from the collection Les Maîtres de l'Affiche printed in 1899 in ChaixThe pardon of Saint-Jean-du-Doigt, north of Morlaix, originates from the miraculous relic of a phalanx of Saint John the Baptist, preserved since the end of the Middle Ages in its eponymous parish enclosure. In 1505, Queen Anne of Brittany, having heard of these cures, is said to have undertaken a pilgrimage to this sacred place to have the finger applied to her diseased eye. The story says that the cure was immediate… At the beginning of the 20th century, this religious and popular festival attracted thousands of pilgrims each year, including many beggars and the infirm. Moreau-Nélaton created this poster in 1894 to promote this event and his hotel establishment. The overall aesthetic is decorative and captures the festive atmosphere of the Pardon. The plate is included in the prestigious collection of lithographic reproductions of the most important posters of the period published by Jules Chéret. At the end of the 19th century, the public's passion for posters was at its peak. Throughout Europe, many collectors were fighting over posters of all sizes and demanding special editions or additional copies. To meet this craze, Jules Chéret selected famous posters and printed them in lithography, on thick paper measuring approximately 29 x 40 cm. These lithographs are still a great opportunity to acquire works designed by the greatest masters of the Belle Époque. Dry stamp of the Masters of Posters at the bottom right
