Adolphe Maugendre. Original Drawing: Portico Of Saint-jean-du-doigt (finistère).
Artist: Adolphe Maugendre
MAUGENDRE, Adolphe. "Portico of St. Jean du Doigt" (Finistère). Graphite with black ink highlights and brown wash. 17 x 24.2 cm (sight size), in a 26 x 33.3 cm frame. Minor loss of stucco on the left edge of the frame. Signed lower right: "A. Maugendre delt". Inscription in the same hand lower left: "J. Haslé, Edr à Morlaix". This drawing, dating from the third quarter of the 19th century, is interesting because it depicts the state of the entrance gate to the parish enclosure of Saint-Jean-du-Doigt (north of Morlaix) at that time: the houses on the left (in the background) no longer exist and have been replaced by more modern ones; the low wall on the left has been lowered; the carved wooden gate has disappeared; the wall on the right, above the second gate, has been restored; and the adjoining house on the right has been modified (the window has been reduced and the thatched roof replaced with slate). The bell tower of the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is shown in the background. Adolphe Maugendre (1809-1895) primarily depicted landscapes and monuments of Normandy and Brittany through drawing and lithography. This drawing attests to an undocumented collaboration with the Morlaix-based publisher and printer J. Haslé, active in the 1860s and 1870s. Ref. 1807
