Jacques Schulé Original Architectural Drawing: A Manor In Alsace, North Facade C.1920-1930

Artist: Jacques Schulé
SCHULÉ, Jacques. “A Manor in Alsace, north facade”. Graphite, wash and white gouache. 70 x 112.5 cm at sight, in a modern frame of 76 x 119 cm. Small wear to the edges and pinholes. Drawing signed lower right: “J. Schulé, architect DPLG” Charles Schulé born in 1865 in Geneva and died in 1935 in Mulhouse. He shared his life between these two cities. After training as an architect in the Ginain workshop in Paris, he moved to Mulhouse, the city of his wife Alice Steiner. He came to take refuge in Geneva during the First World War. He took part in several competitions in Switzerland and notably won a prize for the Butin bridge and a prize for the development of the Saint-Gervais Quarter in Geneva, without however winning the project. Charles Schulé returned to work in Mulhouse in 1919 where he joined forces with Louis Seltzer. Together they built numerous villas in Mulhouse and its surroundings, as well as public and religious buildings. In 1920, the architect Albert Doll took Louis Seltzer's place in the association with Charles Schulé and in 1930, Jacques Schulé, Charles' son, born in 1900 and graduated from the École des Beaux-arts in Paris, joined the association. Charles Schulé will also be director of the Mulhouse Museum of Fine Arts from 1925 to 1935. We owe several important buildings in Mulhouse to the “Cabinet Schulé père-fils et Doll”, notably the train station, inaugurated in 1932.
