SWAN, James (1864-1940). St. Martin's Cathedral, Ypres. (1895). Pencil drawing. 45.7 x 28.7 cm (sheet mounted on 63.5 x 51 cm card). Corners of the mount damaged; stamp on the reverse: "James A. Swan, FRIBA, Architect, Daimler House, Paradise St., Birmingham". Pinholes, stains, soiling. Titled lower left: "Cloth Hall Ypres, 13th Cent."; signed lower right: "JA Swan 95". Ypres Cathedral, built in the 13th and 14th centuries, was completely destroyed during the First World War and then rebuilt identically between 1922 and 1930.
