Englandcirca 1780 : “Textile Design I/V,” pen and gray wash53 x 36 cm (sheet size).
Signs of handling.
Decorated with bindweed, cornflowers, and insects.
These designs were intended to serve as patterns for embroiderers (often of Indian) who worked on silk taffeta to create the textiles used for the dresses of the Ladies of the Court.
These five designs come from a Christie’s auction in 2002.
