The son of a journeyman sculptor, he left school at 13 to learn the trade from his father, while also taking drawing and geometry classes. In 1901, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, where he received several awards, then continued his studies in Paris in 1904, studying in the studios of Flaguière and A. Mercié. According to family accounts, he also knew Bourdelle, as they were both from southwestern France. In 1905, he won first prize in the Falguière studio's life-size sculpture competition. Between 1907 and 1914, he earned his living from his art, creating busts, bas-reliefs, and paintings, and experimenting with encaustic painting. Mobilized during the First World War, he captured life at the front in watercolors. After 1919, he settled in Paris, then lived in Lisbon and began a long relationship with Carlotta Syder, whom he followed to Brazil in the 1950s. There, he collaborated on architectural projects and created stained glass windows, frescoes, and paintings, but experienced a difficult period marked by Carlotta's illness. During his career, Laffite participated in numerous exhibitions, restored more than 120 churches in France (notably with Maurice Denis), and decorated 75 churches in Brazil. Returning to Condom in 1961, he died there on February 26, 1977, continuing to paint until the end of his life.
