"G. Duwarnet. Animated View Of The Forecourt Of Rouen Cathedral During The Works. 1841. "
Watercolor. 35.2 x 27.7 cm (13.8 x 11.0 in) visible, in a 52.7 x 45.3 cm (20.8 x 17.7 in) frame. Signed lower left: "G. Duwarnet, 1841." Rouen Cathedral was damaged by a fire caused by lightning in 1822. Its spire burned completely. Restoration work, including reconstruction of the spire, took place throughout most of the 19th century. Our drawing shows the cathedral square and its façade during the work, with the spire not rebuilt. The southern bell tower is under construction with scaffolding along the Tour de Beurre (south tower of the façade) and a balustrade at its base. The house seen on the right at the base of the Tour de Beurre, as well as those in the foreground, to the left of the drawing, no longer exist today. Ref. A13-41
