Saint Mary Major (Santa Maria Maggiore) in Rome. Two drawings from the end of the 18th century. a) Façade view of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, with the Column of Peace (Colonna della Pace) on the left. Pen, wash and watercolour. 48 x 67.3 cm visible, in a 63 x 83 cm frame. Slight foxing. Paper weakened in places (the drawing had to be doubled at one time and then unstuck to be framed). b) Interior view of the nave of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major. Pen, wash and watercolour. 42 x 67 cm visible, in a 57 x 82 cm frame. A small scratch at the top of the drawing. The sheet was mounted on thick paper. Inscription in pencil on the back of this support: “SA Constantine” (or JA?), “2nd Carton”. Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the four major basilicas of Rome. It was built in the 4th century by Pope Liberius and was regularly enlarged, renovated, and transformed, particularly from the 14th to the 18th centuries. Its Baroque façade was built by the architect Ferdinando Fuga (1699-1781) from 1741 to 1743. Ref. 9-106 / 11-98
