"(weaving). Souvenir Of The London World's Fair, 1862. South Kensington"
Silk weaving. 31.5 x 19 cm visible, in a 53 x 40.2 cm frame. Foxing on the weaving and on the mat board. The 1862 World's Fair was the third World's Fair, after those in London in 1851 and Paris in 1855. Organized by the Royal Society, it was held in a vast building of brick, iron, and glass, built by the architect Francis Fowke in South Kensington Gardens. The exhibition palace is here represented within a circle of coats of arms and foliage, with at the bottom, in the center, the royal coat of arms and their motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (Honi be he who evil thinks of it).
