Watercolor. 39.6 x 53.2 cm, mounted on cardboard. Browned paper. Handwritten note in the lower left corner, difficult to read: "M. Berthaud [?], Canton, 1889" This pagoda was built at the beginning of the Ming dynasty, around 1380. Initially a symbol of power for the local nobility, it later became the northern watchtower of the city of Guangzhou. The monument was rebuilt in 1928 and now houses the Guangzhou City Museum. Ref.
