Original watercolor (present-day Place de la République). 12 x 17.8 cm (image size), in a frame measuring 25.5 x 31.5 cm. Signed lower left: “Gobaut.”
This fountain was erected in 1811 by Pierre-Simon Girard, at the beginning of what is now Rue René Boulanger. Visible on the left side of the drawing is Louis Daguerre’s diorama, built in 1843, a few meters from the ruins of Daguerre’s previous diorama (which had been Paris’s first diorama: opened in 1822 and destroyed by fire in 1839). In the 1860s, as part of Gabriel Davioud’s redesign of the square, the fountain was moved in front of the La Villette livestock market (now Place de la Fontaine-aux-Lions).
