In the third third of the 17th century, as soon as Besançon had been conquered by the French, Vauban fortified the town with major developments, including a complete overhaul of the ramparts, the redevelopment of the Battant enclosure with the construction of Fort Griffon to the north of the Doubs, and the construction of the citadel to the south. Work did not stop with Vauban's death in 1707, and continued throughout the 18th century. Our large-scale plan shows the progress of work on the town and its fortifications, as well as the projects planned in 1759.
