“Doctor Monprofit’s Cellars at Champ” (Maine-et-Loire). Pen and watercolor in monochrome and white gouache highlights on strong paper. 36 x 70.2 cm. Title in the lower left corner, with an undeciphered signature. Ambroise Monprofit (1857-1922) was a doctor and surgeon from Angers. He was mayor of Angers (like his father) from 1908 to 1912 and a Republican MP from 1910 to 1914 and from 1919 to 1922. In 1895, he had the Clos des Sables cellar built in the heart of a vast wine estate in the Coteaux-du-Layon appellation, in the commune of Champ (which became Champ-sur-Layon in 1922 and, from 2016, was part of the new commune of Bellevigne-en-Layon).
