An important gilt bronze and Algerian onyx desk inkwell, Napoleon III period – 19th century. This beautiful decorative inkwell rests on a rectangular base of molded Algerian onyx, richly adorned with chased gilt bronze mounts. It houses two gilt bronze ink reservoirs, retaining their original glass inkwells. At the center stands an elegant gilt bronze female figure representing a classical allegory, likely Fame, holding an ornate scepter and raising a laurel wreath, a symbol of glory and merit. The quality of the bronze chasing, the balanced composition, and the use of Algerian onyx demonstrate a French decorative style characteristic of the Second Empire. A refined desk object, both decorative and functional, typical of bourgeois interiors of the second half of the 19th century. The glass inkwells are present and retain traces of old ink.
The underside retains its original construction with wooden base and period assembly elements, typical of 19th century production.
