Chapan Coat In Silk Ikat Named Abra - Uzbekistan, Bukhara, Circa 1900
Late 19th/Early 20th Century Uzbekistan: A chapan, a dignitary's coat in Bukhara silk ikat called an Abra, originating from Uzbekistan and dating from the late 19th century. Ikat is an ancient technique of dyeing warp threads before weaving, also known in Europe as "chiné à la branche" or, later, "printing on the warp." Kimono cut, long sleeves, open at the front, and unlined. The design features a vibrant, sun-like pattern in red and gold. Note some restorations to the silk and minor fly specks. The coat and silk are in good overall condition and retain a crisp feel. Dimensions: Equivalent to a French size 36-38. Length 122 cm, chest 90 cm, shoulders 39 cm, sleeves 61 cm.
