Pair of bronzes with brown patina – Auguste Louis Lalouette (1826–1883), French sculptor. Rare pair of bronzes with an early brown patina, signed Auguste Louis Lalouette, depicting as a pendant – The Victor and the Vanquished, circa 1870. The Cockfight. Signature on base. These two sculptures represent richly dressed duelists in the fashion of the 14th century, facing each other in a challenging pose, their gaze intense and expressive, each holding a rooster, a symbol of rivalry and bravery. The poses are elegant and full of dramatic tension, subtly conveying the spirit of the duel. The figures wear exquisitely refined costumes: breeches revealing bare legs, finely crafted shirts, capes, feathered hats, and earrings. The meticulous treatment of the fabrics, accessories, and faces testifies to the artist's technical mastery and keen eye for detail. These works belong to the historicist revival of the 19th century, marked by a renewed interest in Gothic and Renaissance styles, also known as Neo-Gothic.
