Sultane

Artist: Jacob Petit

Porcelain "Sultane "illeuse by Jacob Petit - XIXᵉ century

Rare porcelain "Sultane" nightlight from the XIXᵉ century, Jacob Petit "Porcelaine de Paris"

This elegant piece, in very fine overall condition, consists of two interlocking elements forming an ensemble that is both utilitarian and decorative. It is distinguished by the quality of its glaze, its superb brilliance and the richness of its polychromy, characteristic of Jacob Petit's productions.

The so-called "sultana" model, inspired by the orientalism in vogue in the XIXᵉ century, perfectly illustrates the taste for exoticism and refined forms. The nightlights diffused a soft light.

Jacob Petit, developed an original and daring production from its Fontainebleau factory. Long considered exuberant, today his creations are particularly sought-after for their inventiveness, quality of execution and rich decoration.

Jacob Petit was born in Paris.

Born in Paris in 1796, Jacob Petit - whose real name was Jacob Mardochée - first trained as a painter in the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros. Attracted early on to the decorative arts, he undertook numerous trips to Europe, notably Italy, Switzerland, Germany and England, where he perfected his technique and soaked up a variety of influences.
