The decoration depicts a bird resting on a flowering branch overlooking a body of water, enlivened by the delicate presence of a dragonfly. The whole is treated in a characteristic palette blending brown, black, green ,blue and golden yellow, conferring freshness and vivacity to the piece.
La Rochelle earthenware, produced from the beginning of the XVIIIᵉ century, enjoyed great success thanks to their simple, spontaneous and colorful decors inspired by nature and everyday life. They reflect the lively, prosperous atmosphere of this major port on the Atlantic seaboard.
Made both for the local market and for export, these pieces adorned the tables of all strata of society. Their production ceased with the French Revolution, making these objects particularly sought-after today.
