Important three-panel folding screen made of gilded Cordoba leather – Louis XV period – 18th century
Rare and elegant three-panel screen made of Cordoba leather, richly gilded, embossed, and painted, a Louis XV-era piece from the mid-18th century.
Each panel is adorned with a sumptuous design of large foliage motifs, bouquets of flowers, fruits, and arabesques finely embossed on a gilded background. The richness of the composition, the delicacy of the relief, and the quality of the decoration attest to the remarkable craftsmanship of the artisans specializing in Cordoba leather, whose creations adorned European aristocratic residences in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The carved, gilded, and polychrome wooden frames elegantly highlight each sheet and harmonize beautifully with the leather’s decoration. The set retains a beautiful antique patina and is in particularly good condition, with signs of wear consistent with its age that contribute to its authenticity and charm.
The reverse side is entirely lined with canvas, in keeping with traditional craftsmanship.
According to its provenance, this screen was acquired from the Gismondi Gallery, renowned for the quality of its works of art and antique furniture.
A prestigious object designed to protect against drafts while decorating interiors, the Cordoba leather folding screen remains today one of the most refined examples of 18th-century decorative arts.
