The composition is organized around an inner frame inscribed within a wide black band with rounded corners, which structures the image like a window opening onto a symbolic universe. At the center stands a stylized human figure with clean, geometric features, adorned with a necklace of pearls and circular ornaments—a tutelary figure, part human, part shamanic. It is surmounted by a black bird with a pointed beak and outstretched wings, while a second red bird takes flight to its left, completing this bestiary of the invisible.

The palette is powerful and contrasting: an intense brick red radiates from the center, fading to slate blue in the lower sections, framed by the deep black of the outer border. The white of the paper acts as light and breath. The background blends repeated geometric patterns—grids of triangles, oblique bands, hatching—that evoke ritual textiles, pre-Columbian friezes, and the rigor of Constructivism.

Limited to fifty copies, this work powerfully illustrates the singular visual language of Joël Cazaux, at the crossroads of primitivism, symbolism, and graphic modernity.

The work is in excellent condition, mounted under glass and a passe-partout. Frame: varnished wooden frame in good condition, with minor signs of age.

Joël Cazaux (Dinard, 1940)
Trained at the École Estienne and then with the Belgian painter Marc Stockman, Joël Cazaux perfected his mastery of engraving at Atelier 17 in Paris—the renowned intaglio workshop founded by Stanley William Hayter—between 1967 and 1968. From 1969 to 2000, he taught visual arts at the École des Beaux-Arts d'Architecture in Paris.

In 1977, he settled in the Perche region, where he has developed a body of work blending painting, sculpture, and printmaking, inspired by the archaic traditions of great civilizations—Egyptian, Aztec, and African.

His work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in France, Switzerland, and Germany.
