In a classical composition inherited from the tradition of historical landscape painting, Pierre-Nicolas Wéry unfolds a vast composition bathed in a golden, twilight light. At the center of the composition, on a rocky promontory, rises the imposing silhouette of a ruined tower flanked by vestiges of medieval fortifications, whose ochre stones blend harmoniously into the surrounding landscape.

In the foreground, a winding dirt path enlivens the scene of rural life: a peasant can be seen leading a horse harnessed to a cart loaded with hay, while a few sheep graze on the hillside. To the right, a curtain of trees with autumnal foliage frames the composition and guides the eye towards a luminous valley floor, where buildings and a large body of water can be glimpsed beneath a sky veiled with pearly clouds.

The palette, based on warm browns, golden ochres, and pale blues, reflects the influence of Neoclassical landscape painting and the tradition of Italian vedutisti. The treatment of the raking light, uniting sky and earth in a single hazy atmosphere, reveals the mastery of a painter concerned with poetry and balance.

The artist's name has been added in pencil on the back of the work, on the stretcher. There are also some details about previous owners.

The painting is in very good condition (a few fine craquelures). It is offered in an Empire frame in fairly good condition (some gilding restoration).

Very little is known about Pierre-Nicolas Wéry, except that he was born in Paris and spent most of his life in Lyon. The Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon owns one of his oil paintings, but the artist is primarily known for his engravings of the Lyon region. The work we are presenting is therefore an exceptional testament to his activity as a painter.

The artwork can be viewed and collected from the gallery (07240).
