The Rialto Bridge in Venice
Gouache on paper
Venetian School, 19th century, in the style of the 18th century
Monogrammed “RT”
Dimensions of the artwork: 30 × 24.5 cm — with frame: 55 × 46.5 cm
Very good condition
Gilded frame with rich stucco work, in perfect condition
This gouache transports us to the heart of Venice, in front of the famous Rialto Bridge. The scene is rendered with depth, from the bustling quay in the foreground to the bridge spanning the Grand Canal in the distance.
On the right stands a grand palace with slender, funnel-shaped chimneys, characteristic of Venetian architecture. A staircase leads down to the quay, where several elegant figures in 18th-century attire are moving about: ladies in hoop skirts, men wearing tricorn hats. A small white dog adds to the scene.
On the water, gondolas glide between fishing boats with their sails furled and tall wooden poles (the pali, those mooring posts typical of the lagoon). In the center, the Rialto Bridge stretches out with its wide arch and shops, bathed in bright light beneath a cloudy sky.
The artist pays particular attention to the details in the foreground: a heavily laden boat, covered with canvas, and a wooden crate floating on the water, bearing the monogram “RT”—the only mark left by the artist.
The work is part of the long tradition of vedute, those views of Venice that were highly sought after by travelers on the Grand Tour as early as the 18th century. The composition adopts a viewpoint made famous by Canaletto and Francesco Guardi: the Grand Canal seen in profile, with the Rialto Bridge marking its distant end.
The treatment—the finesse of the architectural rendering, the liveliness of the small figures, the transparency of the water—reflects that “18th-century style” that many artists continued to cultivate throughout the 19th century to meet the ongoing demand of a clientele enamored with Venice.
To date, the “RT” monogram has not been linked to any documented artist. The work is therefore offered as an anonymous piece of high quality, in the tradition of the vedutisti.
Frame and Condition
This beautiful gouache, in excellent condition, is mounted under glass with a chocolate-brown mat that highlights the freshness of the colors.
The frame dates from the late 19th century and was regilded at a later date. It is made of wood and gilded stucco and is in excellent condition. It features a recessed profile (grooved) adorned with several bands of decoration: rows of pearls and ovals, and friezes of intertwined foliage and vines. The warm, even gilding elegantly frames the artwork.
