This canvas forms a pair with another shown in our gallery.

On a dirt track leading up to a low farmhouse lurking in the countryside, a man with his back to the dwelling returns in the oblique evening light. On the right, a tall, slender poplar crosses the picture from bottom to top, its half-stripped branches silhouetted against a sky of beautiful chromatic intensity: a yellow and orange band on the horizon, pink and lilac clouds fading towards the blue zenith. In the distance, in front of the farmhouse, a few cows lie down in the darkened meadows.

Executed in a free Impressionist brushstroke - pasty and lifted in the sky, tighter in the foliage - this composition shares with its counterpart at the mill the same elongated vertical format, the same chosen hour and the same economy of means to camp out figures and landscape. The motif of the sunken lane opening onto a blazing horizon is in keeping with the tradition of late 19th-century rural landscapes, from Corot to the painters of the Barbizon School, while betraying an already post-impressionist sensibility in the treatment of the sky.

E. Marino remains to this day an unrecorded painter, on whom no known documentary source allows us to rely. The striking stylistic similarity with the work of Eugène Galien-Laloue - palette, brushstrokes, choice of motifs - had led to the hypothesis of a pseudonym; this second canvas, coherent in every respect with the first, only reinforces it without, however, making it possible to decide.
