Mantel Clock, Allegory Of Abundance In Bronze, 19th Century Restoration Period.
Artist: Pons (horloger Estampille)
An elegant clock in chased, gilded, and patinated bronze, depicting a graceful allegory of the Sea, Abundance, and Wealth. The Allegorical Figure: The goddess, draped in antique style and crowned with flowers, is shown in a dreamy pose. She sits on a rock with a deep brown-green patina, finely worked and adorned with naturalistic vegetation. The deity leans on an anchor, a symbol of stability and maritime power. Beside her, a magnificent cornucopia overflows with fruit, flowers, and ears of wheat, evoking fertility. The Base and Ornamentation: The whole rests on a finely chased bronze base, adorned with a magnificent bronze appliqué representing an antique trireme (evoking the ship of Ulysses). This is surmounted by an antique floral cup and a large wreath, partly decorated with wheat and partly with fruit, intertwined with ribbons and a bow. The base, featuring architectural moldings and projections, is highlighted with palmette friezes. It rests on four semicircular feet, also decorated with palmette motifs. The Dial: The silvered dial, encircled by a delicate floral garland, completes this harmonious ensemble. It displays the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes via a peripheral railway track, with Breguet hands, combining precision and refinement. The movement has been fully serviced and is stamped Pons in Paris. It is the original wire-wound movement bearing the fine signature of Pons (Horloger à Paris Tardy Page 529), a renowned watchmaker during the Empire and early 19th century, who received numerous awards for the quality of his movements.
