Artist: Leroy à Rouen Horloger
Gilt bronze alcove clock after a model by Osmond, Napoleon III period, 19th century. Dimensions: Height 45 cm, Width 22 cm, Depth 11 cm. Style: Transitional Louis XV-Louis XVI period, Second half of the 19th century, Napoleon III period. Very good condition, superb original gilding. Fine chasing and high-quality craftsmanship. Signed Leroy, clockmaker in Rouen. Vincenti movement, Medal winner 1855. Gilding. In very good working order. Checked. Description of the piece: This magnificent wall clock, or alcove clock, presents a tripartite architectural composition characteristic of the Transitional Louis XV-Louis XVI style. The upper part is crowned by a covered antique-style vase, adorned with fluting and cascading garlands. This rests on a pedestal integrated into a geometric base forming an entablature. The vase lid is surmounted by a pine cone finial. The central body: The white enamel dial is set within a finely molded bezel. It indicates the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes, in increments of five, in Arabic numerals. The gilt bronze "Dauphine" hands are delicately cut and openworked. The dial bears the signature of Auguste Leroy in Caen (referenced in Tardy). Slightly worn on the dial. Access to the winding mechanism is via a handsome domed bezel, highlighted by an elegant row of pearls, with a hinged opening. Ornamentation and Structure: The dial, surmounted by a row of gadroons, is flanked by scrolls from which broad laurel garlands emerge, converging at the base. Beneath the dial, a geometric structure in the shape of an inverted "M" stabilizes the composition with its vertical lines and central curve. The sides and front reveal soundholes decorated with trelliswork, centered by a "Queen's" motif on gilt brass plates, all framed by powerful acanthus leaves. The base of the clock is finished with a large, veined acanthus leaf, topped by a seed bud as a finial. The entire piece is distinguished by its numerous projections and the quality of its moldings. Condition report: All original, superb gilding with matte and polished finishes. Signs of wear and age. Complete clock, good movement signed Vincenti, silver medal 1855. Clockmaker Auguste Leroy Rouen in the Tardy region, from the Parisian Leroy family. Original mechanism intact, without modifications, it works well and strikes the hours and half-hours on an antique bell, beautiful elegant sound. Supplied with pendulum, winding key, and striking bell. Built-in bronze wall-mounting ring. Illustrating the excellence of 19th-century Parisian bronze workers, this gilt bronze cartel clock stands out as a masterful piece. It brilliantly combines technical prowess and refined decorative vocabulary, all presented within a structure of great nobility.
