Pair Of Louis XV Style Chased And Gilded Bronze Candlesticks By Ja Meissonnier, Late 19th Century

Pair of large Louis XV style gilt bronze candlesticks after models by Juste Aurélie Meissonnier (1695-1750), architect, ornamentalist, and goldsmith to King Louis XV. He is considered one of the leading figures of the Rococo style. This pair of spectacular Rococo candlesticks in finely chased and gilt bronze is a Parisian work of exceptional quality. The perfection of their execution and the pronounced, harmonious curves make them a truly impressive piece. Dimensions: Height 32 cm, Base Diameter 16 cm. Condition Report: Very good condition, lovely original matte and polished gilding. Minimal signs of wear and age. Candlestick Architecture: Its large size is complemented by a beautiful baluster-shaped stem with a wide bulge and deep moldings, adorned with scrolls, stylized acanthus leaves, foliage, and shells. The whole is incorporated into a continuous, naturalistic movement typical of the Louis XV Rococo style. At the top rests a beautiful, rotating candle holder, richly decorated with acanthus leaves and a fixed drip tray integrated with scrolls so as not to interrupt the flow of the decoration. The interior is flat for candle wax drips. It is mounted with a wide screw thread, as was common in the 18th century (see photo). This screwed stem is integrated into a very wide, tiered, round base with three elegant projections and rich decoration of stylized acanthus leaves, various foliage, and moldings (flat, concave, and round) and scrolls, all in a continuous upward and downward movement, typical of the ascending and descending patterns of Meissonnier's designs. This model stands out from other 19th-century pieces due to its size. Marked RR under the bases and N on the screws. Period: Louis XV style, late 19th century, circa 1880.
