Condition: Sumptuous original Mercury gilding. Magnificent brown-green patina. Superb original condition. Minimal signs of use and age. Very finely chiseled. Superb craftsmanship, with 10 bronze pieces per candlestick. The contrast between the gilt and the patina enhances the quality of each part, creating a superb and striking decorative effect, with beautiful dimensions and proportions. Description of the Candlestick's Architecture: The structure rests on an elegant tripod base, alternating concave and flat surfaces highlighted by moldings. It is encircled by a delicate continuous egg-and-dart frieze, upon which rise three lion's hocks. These, ending in clawed feet, are enhanced by rich, enveloping acanthus leaves. The superbly crafted shaft adopts a baluster shape, its domed base adorned with a rich palmette decoration. The delicately fluted body of the column flares out at the top to allow large, drooping laurel leaves to flourish. The summit is crowned by a circular candle holder with a profusion of leaf and rosette decoration. The whole is completed by a removable bobeche with a basin, whose fluted decoration echoes the work of the shaft. Provenance: Private Collection.
