" French Infantry Helmet Model 1791"
French Revolutionary period, infantry and chasseur A cheval 1791 model helmet. The skull of the helmet is made from felt which is waxed and varnished giving the appearance of black leather. A canvas turban wraps the skull and is painted to resemble a leopard skin print. The turban is secured with cotton ties to the front, this allows the wearer to lower it to use as a neck flap during foul weather. Black horse hair crest, with the hair being curled and slightly extended towards the rear, both indications of a Chasseur A Cheval rather than infantry. Interior is complete with its original leather sweatband and hessian lining. A very rare piece of French headdress, used from 1791 to 1795.
