"Large 17th Century Biblical Canvas - The Annunciation With The Angel Gabriel & The Virgin Mary"
Large and beautiful biblical canvas dating from the 17th or early 18th century, depicting the Annunciation, a famous episode from the Old Testament in which the angel Gabriel visits the Virgin Mary to announce that she has been conceived by the Holy Spirit and will give birth to the Messiah, the Son of God. Note: this painting is unsigned and has never been examined by an expert, but its high quality suggests the work of a skilled artist, likely from the Italian school. Indeed, a quick online search reveals Italian compositions that employ a similar theatrical approach: the angel Gabriel is positioned on the left with a dove symbolizing the divine spirit, and on the right, the Virgin Mary stands near a lectern, her hand resting on a Bible (see some examples in the last few images of the Annunciation). Restoration: Please note that this artwork has undergone restoration, meaning the paint has been reattached to its support (it adheres perfectly to the canvas) and a tension strip has been applied around the edges to tighten it. There are some losses and wear, but the previous owners preferred to keep it as is, with the "marks" of time. Canvas size: 100 cm x 91 cm - ask me for more photos if needed.
