"Louis Azema 1876-1963 - Large Impressionist Painting - Interior Scene "
Large and remarkable impressionist painting dating from the 1920s-1930s and representing a moving interior scene with an old woman who seems to be contemplating memories taken out of a wardrobe... The work is signed by the painter Louis Azéma (1876-1963) an excellent artist to whom the Bénézit devotes a good chapter and whose biography can be read on the Wikipedia site: born in the town of Agde in Hérault, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier in 1892, then joined the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.... A pupil of Gustave Moreau, François Flameng and Fernand Cormon, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français, obtaining the gold medal in 1921... he was then Hors-Concours and many of his paintings were kept at the Museums of Agde and Béziers... endowed with a beautiful voice, he entered the Conservatoire de Musique de Paris, obtaining in 1900 the First Prize for Singing at the Opera and the Opéra Comique... the Lyon Opera hired him as first singing bass in the troupe of the Théâtre National de l'Opéra Comique in Paris... from 1941 to 1942 he took over the direction of the Société du Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse... note: one of the attractions of the painting proposed here is its humanist atmosphere which shows the solitude of an old woman leaning over her memories: we notice that the composition focuses on this character who is placed in the corner of a room with a large space and two empty chairs, as if to better symbolize her isolation... Objectively it is great art! Values & auctions: the value of this artist's paintings varies depending on their theme and quality, from a few hundred to several thousand euros: his record at more than 6000 euros was announced in 2015 for a painting entitled "the gypsy dance"... this exceeded his previous record at 4750 euros which had been obtained in 1999 at Christie's- New York... apart from these two records, we note among his results about twenty paintings sold in recent years between 1000 & 3600 euros / Source Art-Price.
