Pair Of English Porcelain Chelsea Derby Couple Figurines, 19th Century
A pair of polychrome English porcelain figurines from Chelsea* Derby, depicting a couple dressed in garments embroidered with colorful flowers, standing before a richly flowering tree. The man holds a drum, the woman a goblet. Late 19th century. These figurines are in good overall condition. Signed (see photos). Note: chips, nicks, and small losses along the edges of the trees (see red arrows), some soiling, scratches, and signs of age (see photos). *Chelsea porcelain was manufactured from 1745 to 1784 in a factory built by the Fleming Nicholas Sprimont, in partnership with the jeweler Charles Gouyn. The factory produced only soft-paste porcelain. This porcelain production was late compared to what was being done at the time in continental Europe, but Chelsea was the first significant porcelain factory in the United Kingdom. The factory was bought in 1769 by William Duesbury, owner of the Derby factory. The production of this period, in the Neoclassical style, cannot be distinguished from Derby porcelain. It is known as Chelsea-Derby porcelain. Dimensions: Height 17.5 cm, Width at the base 10.5 cm, Base 7.5 cm x 7 cm. Reference: 500 993. All photos are available at: www.antiques-delaval.com
