Powder Flask, Coconut Shell, Napoleon Profile, War Attributes, Helmet, 19th Century
Carved coconut powder flask, decorated on one side with a profile portrait of Emperor Napoleon I; on the other with symbols of war: helmet, sword, axe, standards, etc., as well as plant motifs. This 19th-century work is likely the work of a sailor or convict. The powder flask is in good overall condition. The spout forms the head of a grotesque figure. Note: one eye is missing from the figure, a ring is detached on the side, a ring is missing in the middle, and there are scratches and signs of age (see photos). *Coconut: Like corozo, coconuts were worked by sailors or convicts. The latter worked them to pass the time, but also, and especially, to earn a little money to improve their daily lives. It may also have been used by sailors during their long voyages. These coconut or corozo objects are beautiful examples of folk art.
