"Set Of 4 Etruscan-style Chairs In Finely Carved And Lacquered Wood, Directoire Period, Circa 1795"
A set of four finely carved beechwood chairs, featuring scrolled backs adorned with carved and openwork palmettes. They rest on tapered legs at the front and saber legs at the rear. Our chairs are newly reupholstered in lemon-yellow silk gourgouran (Lelièvre). Made in Paris, they are comparable to the productions of Jacob or Demay, from the Directoire period, late 18th century, around the mid-1790s. It is interesting to note that these chairs represent the transitional style between Louis XVI and Empire: the front of the chair is still very much in the Louis XVI style, while the rear, with its scrolled back and saber legs, foreshadows the Empire style. Excellent condition. The horsehair stuffing on its original 18th-century webbing is intact, and the chairs are newly reupholstered in silk with black braid. A very bright and elegant set, a beautiful blend of modern and antique styles. The design is classic, but here executed with excellent craftsmanship and perfect proportions. Unfortunately, they are not stamped, so we cannot definitively attribute them to the master craftsman who produced them. Note: we are also selling a pair of similarly styled and elegant armchairs, suitable for creating a complete living room set. Width at the front: 43.5 cm; Back height: 86 cm; Seat height: 43.5 cm
