"Pair Of Etruscan-style Armchairs In Carved And Lacquered Wood, Directoire Period - Circa 1795"
A pair of finely carved beechwood armchairs, featuring scrolled backs, tapered front legs, and saber-shaped rear legs. They are newly reupholstered in lemon-yellow striped silk (Lelièvre). These chairs are of Parisian manufacture, comparable to the productions of Jacob or Demay, from the Directoire period, late 18th century, around the mid-1790s. It is interesting to note that these chairs represent the transitional style between Louis XVI and Empire: the front of the chair is still very Louis XVI, while the back, with its scrolled back and saber legs, foreshadows the Empire style. Excellent condition, with some older restorations. The horsehair stuffing on its original 18th-century webbing is present, and the chairs have been newly reupholstered in silk with black braid. A very luminous set, a good blend of modern and antique. Very elegant, the model is classic, but here executed with excellent quality craftsmanship and perfect proportions. Unfortunately, they are not stamped, so we cannot definitively attribute them to the master craftsman who produced them. Note: we are also selling a set of four chairs of a similar design, suitable for creating a living room set. Armchair width: 56.5 cm Height: 88.5 cm Seat height: 38.5 cm
