Sketchbook from nature by auxiliary military physician in Alpine Army, summer 1892. Composed of 26 drawings (21 pen, 5 pencil) and 3 pages of pencil sketches. Plus about ten dried edelweiss and visiting card of Mr. and Mrs. Victor de Pressensé (19th-century theologian and Protestant pastor).
Military context: Alpine Army - 14th Army Corps - 28th Division - 56th Brigade - Alpine Battalion of 97th. Alfred Fuchs is auxiliary to 3rd bis Alpine Group, mixture of 1st battalion of 97th regiment, 12th battery of 2nd artillery, and detachment of 4th engineering.
Alpine Army: created 1888 under Third Republic, formed from troops of 14th and 15th army corps (men from Lyon and Marseille). The 14th corps was created in 1870, its first commander-in-chief being General Baron Berge (divisional general from 1888, military governor of Lyon), who played essential role in organizing this army charged with monitoring Italian border.

Drawings 18-21: humorous scene about how to wear the large navy-blue Béarn-origin beret nicknamed "la tarte" (the pie), distinctive uniform of Alpine Army.
