Paris, 1863-1867. 12mo album (161 x 120 mm), 10 mounted leaves, green percaline, spine with embossed decoration, embossed frames on boards with shield in center of upper cover, gilt edges.
Album of 20 well-contrasted albumen prints documenting Imperial Europe and Second Empire France. Series of crowned head portraits: Pope Pius IX (Franck), European princes and princesses - Victoria, Isabella, Leopold II, Christian IX (Charlet & Jacotin), Napoleon III, Alexander II, William I, Franz Joseph I, Victor Emmanuel II, Charles XV, William III, Abdul-Aziz-Khan (Neurdein). Followed by a Carousel at Saumur (Le Roch), possibly unpublished views of Villandry, Luynes and Comacre castles, portrait of Duke of Conegliano (Estienne), and Arcimboldo-style satirical caricature of Empress Eugénie criticizing her support for Papal States (Galerie fantasmagorique du lampion / Bernheim).
Documented photographers: François Marie Louis Gabriel Gobinet de Villecholle known as Franck (1816-1906), innovator in stereoscopic views and photomosaic. Antonin, Étienne and Ernest Neurdein, associated in Paris 1864 (future Neurdein frères, 1869). Joseph Toussaint Le Roch, first professional photographer in Saumur (1862). Estienne studio (Susse Estienne et cie), founded 1861, bankrupt 1864. Charlet & Jacotin, Parisian studio active 1863-1867.
