May (alice Lilian) - Photos Of Egypt - Photographic Album Of Palestine And Egypt
Oblong 12mo album (140 x 170 mm), 46 leaves, green cloth, gilt "Album" to upper cover, gilt edges.
Album of 99 silver gelatin prints, taken in March 1918 at El-Arich (Egypt), Gaza, Bethlehem, Tel Aviv (then Jaffa), and Jerusalem. Subjects include portraits, landscapes, and historic monuments (Western Wall, Dome of the Rock, Church of the Nativity, Ecce Homo Arch...).
Several portraits depict soldiers of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF), formed in 1916 to command British Commonwealth troops in Egypt. In 1917, the EEF took Gaza and entered Jerusalem; by spring 1918, most British soldiers had been sent to the Western Front, while remaining forces prepared for a major offensive against the Turks. March 1918 saw a failed attempt to capture Es Salt, and reinforcements were awaited from India.
Album signed by Alice Lilian May (unidentified). Some photos captioned in pencil on the album or verso.
Condition: prints faded.
