Cambrasine Or Crewel Work, Polychrome Wool Embroidery On Fleece Ratine - France Circa 1700
Circa 1700-1730, France. A flamboyant Baroque-style tapestry in Cambrasine, wool embroidery or French Crewel work on a ratine plush ground, dating from the first third of the 18th century. The stem stitch embroidery allows for a richness and gradation of color reminiscent of the work of Jean Revel, a Lyon textile ornamentalist, in his lampas woven on a handloom. The Baroque design is structured with a central medallion adorned with scallop shells, cranes, and ribboned flowers. The border is draped with arabesques and naturalistic flowers, while the spandrels at the four corners display urns filled with ears of wheat and grapes. Original brass rings at the top allow for wall hanging. There are a few pulled threads and some missing wool embroidery, as well as slight dusting of the ratine plush ground. No major defects, stains, or holes. Very good condition in terms of color and preservation for this period. Few French examples of crewel work have survived; this is a rare example.
