Small Boutstitched Wedding Quilt - Provence, First Empire Period, Circa 1810
Early 19th Century, Provence. Small quilted and embossed wedding quilt dating from the First French Empire period. Made of Siamese cotton and linen, with double quilting forming lozenges, typical of the oldest Provençal quilts. The design, in a classic layout with a central star medallion and stylized vase spandrels, is boutis quilted. The borders feature hearts, lyres, scrolls, and stylized vases, highlighted by a trim of white cotton tassels on all four sides (some minor losses to the tassels). The batting between the two layers of fabric, here Siamese and white cotton, is extremely fine, giving this quilt a great lightness, a hallmark of the upper class. It is reversible and has been delicately cleaned. Clean, without holes or stains. Very good condition. Dimensions: 157 cm x 132 cm with 4 cm fringe.
