Pyrenees XVIe Century Or Ealier : "incredible Gothic Monoxylous Chest"
Pyrenees, 16th century or earlier: "Incredible Gothic monoxylous chest," fir wood, 49 x 108 x 46 cm, wrought iron hinges.
This chest has undergone numerous restorations, some more successful than others, throughout its long history: the lid with the count's coat of arms and hinges were replaced in the early 20th century, along with numerous repairs and a later engraving of gardening tools. Its origins are Navarrese, but it could have been made on this side of the Pyrenees.
This extremely rare example of monoxylous construction, which I have encountered for the first time in forty years, makes it a museum piece. Please feel free to request additional photos or information by email or telephone.
