Hippolyte Durand : "interior Survey And Elevation Of Our Lady Of The Epine"

Hippolyte Durand (1801-1882): "Interior Survey and Elevation of Notre-Dame de l'Epine near Châlons-sur-Marne," watercolor over pencil sketches on several sheets joined together and finished with an added border, 104 x 258 cm, and pencil drawing, 172 x 97 cm, on a sheet 186 x 100 cm.
As it stands, there are tears, detachments, and small losses, mainly along the edges (some pieces have been recovered), and slight sun fading.
A label with the name of the monument at the bottom and another with the number 150 allowed us to identify the Durand who signed these works. Indeed, they were exhibited under this number in the Architecture section of the 1838 Salon by this extremely important Neo-Gothic architect, a precursor of Viollet-le-Duc, for the construction of this church, which has since become a basilica.
Note that the left spire is missing, as it was demolished at the end of the 18th century to install a Chapppe telegraph and was not rebuilt until 1868.
An unsuccessful candidate for the Notre-Dame de Paris project, he consoled himself with numerous other projects, including the entire Diocese of Bayonne and the Empress's Palace in Biarritz.
