Pierre Labrouche : "village In Old Castille"

Pierre Labrouche (1876-1956): "Village in Old Castille", oil on canvas from Maison Blanchet 83.5 X 92.5 cm, mounted in an exceptional oak frame 111 X 119 cm.
Various labels and annotations on the back indicate that this paintingdates from 1936, was exhibited at the Salon de la Société Nationale of Beaux-Arts in Paris which he was an esteemed Sociétaire (Admis d'office!) and presented with another painting, N° 1, of the same subject, but from a different angleangle, which we know from having sold it twenty years ago!
Even though partially eaten away by silver fish, a pencil annotationput us on the right track for our Net searches: it's the little village ofof Pancorbo at the foot of the Obarenes mountains in the Province of Burgos.
The artist, who delivered us landscapes from his native Basque country, Morocco, Italy and of course, as here, Spain, which he knew well.
Labrouche's characteristic touch admirably serves the minerality of the site, both built and natural.
