Edouard Gelos : "witches !"
Edouard Gélos (1878-1945) “Witches!”, oil on cardboard 54 X 73 cm, mounted in its period frame with faded gilding 60 X 80 cm. Signed, dated 1920 and dedicated to Destizon, a label with the title and the author’s address in Hendaye.
Our painting with Goyesque accents shows us a group of women guided by the eldest carrying a torch descending into a cave where the Sabbath will be held...
Directly inspired by the events of Zugarramurdi with its immense caves, where in 1610 the historic trial of the Inquisition took place against 31 inhabitants of the village, some of whom were burned alive...
If Gélos was a great traveler in his youth, boarding at the Casa Velasquez in Madrid, after the war of 14-18 he acquired a house-workshop in Guéthary overlooking the sea "always starting again" as Paul Valery said, and which was enough for him as a model, sometimes pushing as far as the neighboring village of Bidart, or even as far as Hendaye.
