Egbert Van Heemskerk II : “the Bloodletting” And “the Sick Man”

Egbertvan Heemskerk II (1634–1734): “The Bloodletting” and “The Sick Man,” a pair of oil-on-canvas paintings, 49 x 61 cm, mounted in well-preserved antique frames that have been regilded, 64 × 75 cm.
Re-stretched, with previous restorations; an opaque, glossy varnish makes photography difficult; attribution and inventory number on the back.
The son and pupil of his father, Egbert the Elder, our artist specialized in genre scenes, somewhat in the spirit of his contemporary Teniers, but is also notable for the multitude of still lifes he scatters throughout his compositions: bottles and vials reflecting the light, a brazier, jugs and flasks, polished pewter, etc.
Here, in a sort of field hospital, around a woman who is is being bled, another is having his foot treated, while an assistant prepares medicine on a table—all under the watchful eyes of on lookers waiting their turn, laden with provisions intended as payment for the doctor !
In the other, the doctor has gone to the patient’s bedside because the patient is no longer in good health: two grand children, a wife, and a priest are praying at the foot of his bed, while a notary and his clerk are recording his last will and testament.
